How big is God? Very simple question, but do we really know. We can say that, "He made the heavens and the earth!" Even then, do we really get it? We have to dig a little to get even the tip of the tip of the tip of the iceberg. God describes Himself several times. Many of those times, He describes Himself in a way that we get. Exodus 34:6 finds Him describing Himself as the compassionate, gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in love. That's pretty cool. He is not always angry, loves us unconditionally, and has grace that covers us multiple times over. I can get down with that.
Here's the kicker. More times than that, God describes Himself in a way that we CANNOT understand. First off, physics tells us that to have force we have to have weight and movement. (Force=Mass x Acceleration) Now, God describes Himself as three things, in particular, that defy the previously mentioned law of physics: fire, light, the word. All three have infinite force and no weight. If you concentrate fire and light enough you can cut through steel (laser, torch respectively). What about the spoken word? Does that weigh anything? No, of course not. How much weight do our words carry? Proverbs 18:21 says death and life are in the power of the tongue. If you were constantly talked down to all your life, or even for a month for that matter, how would you feel? You would feel just the way that you were talked to all the time. The opposite would happen if you were spoken to in a healthy manner: encouragement and correction where needed. You'd be on your way to success. What's the key to it all? The words that come into your ears.
Now let's talk about the creation that God made. The earth is 93 million miles from the sun. That is a LONG stinking way. The distance to the nearest star is 4.242 light years away. Is your jaw on the floor yet? OK, how about this? That is equivalent to nearly 25 TRILLION miles away. That is 267,000 times farther than it is to our sun. That is even FARTHER. The kicker is that God made every single bit of it.
NOW, Since we are on the subject of light, let's go for it shall we? God is Light, and in Him is no darkness at all. Science tells us that the universe is expanding at the speed of light. Doesn't it stand to reason that the universe is expanding at the speed of the substance of the being that is holding it together.
Next, the speed of light is 186,222 miles per second on earth. If you had a rope, and you had knots in the rope, the knot farthest away from the center would travel the fastest. The exponential increase in speed of the knots is relative to the exponential increase in the speed of light. Also, time slows down the farther that you get past light speed. So, way out at the end of the universe where the speed of light is some unbelievable figure, time has slowed down to the point that the universe is only seven days old. Which makes sense because the bible says that God is sitting at the seventh day looking back at His creation.
Last but not least, my favorite thing in the Bible about God and how mind blowing He is. In Exodus 33, God puts Moses in the cleft of a rock, covers him with His hand and only shows him His backside. Now, most people that find their geneology from Europe think form, Hebrew people think function. We don't want to think the form of the back side of God. If you think function, it shines a whole new light (no pun intended) on all of this. What is the function of light? It reveals things. Light holds pictures. As mentioned before, God is Light and in HIm is no darkness at all. If we see the back side of light, we see where light has been which would be the past. That is the way that the ancient rabbis taught that Moses wrote Genesis with such detail without being there.
With all this bigness of God stuff, I think it's safe to say that we have nothing to worry about. We can really give our problems to Him, and He can actually handle them. He is so much bigger than we could ever imagine. Also, I think it is easier, knowing all of this stuff, we can put some of our light arguments away and enjoy the presence of our Mighty God! We could not ever know everything about Him, with extreme awesomeness like this. I bless you today to know that even as astronomically big as He is, He still took time and effort to send Jesus so that you could have a relationship with Him and He believes in you more than you believe in Him. Grace and Peace be with you ALWAYS!!!
