The Wind and The Water

When we go looking for questions in Scripture, we have to be willing to accept the fact that we may never know the answer to them.  I thought that this was the case a few months ago.  While studying a topic for a blog entry, I stumbled onto something in the story of Jesus calming the storm.  I noticed something in the way that Jesus interacted with the elements: "Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm." (Mark 4:39)  I have read this a thousand times and it wasn't until recently that I noticed this.
Jesus rebukes the wind.  At other times, who else did Jesus rebuke?  Demons and religious people.  Who did Jesus tell to be at peace? Majority of the time it was people that he had just healed.  It was as if he was rebuking the wind for messing with the water.  What in the world is going on here?  I tried everything that I know to find the answer.  In Scripture, if you find the first mention of something, that will define all other mentions of it. The first mention of wind and water interacting is after the flood when God made wind pass over the water and it receded.
I asked my mentor, my pastor, an evangelist that was trained by a pastor who has all of his rabbi training, I even asked Jesus.  For a while, no answer.  I was as confused with this topic as with all my other questions combined.  Then, I was discussing the topic again with my mentor and it hit me like a glorious ton of bricks.  This was a type and shadow of us.  We can find ourselves in one of the three elements in this story at one time or another.  You have water being made rough by the wind, a boat being tossed around on the water, and wind itself.
I am going to tell you what each one represents and then we'll look at life applications for this story.  First you have the water, that is someone who is being oppressed by something or someone.  Next you have the wind, that is the oppressor. Finally you have the boat.  The boat symbolizes people in your life that are effected by your ripples. We all have something oppressing us.  It stinks, you don't want it to happen to you, but it does for one reason or another.  No matter what it is that happens, what is oppressing us usually is something that no matter how hard we try, we cannot seem to get out from under it.  When we try and build something (figuratively speaking) the wind of the oppressor comes and knocks it down.  The people around us that we love the most are often the ones that catch the majority of the stuff that we go through.  That boat is constantly getting beaten by the waves caused by the wind.
Now, here's the kicker. This is a vicious cycle that repeats itself way too often.  Our loved ones are being tossed around and beaten and almost devoured by whatever has them and they pass it on to the next level.  In the case of this story, that level is where the oppression stops: The Disciples.  In the story, they have somebody with them that they have some idea that He can handle this. They ask Jesus to help them.  In classic God fashion, Jesus gets to the very root of the problem and deals with it promptly and gains all the honor and glory from it, furthering His relationship with all involved.
Now I ask you, WHat do you feel like you are being oppressed by?
Who are you oppressing because of your oppressor?
Are you the water, or the boat, or the people in the boat?
Or maybe, are you the wind?
These are all questions that we need to ask ourselves of all of our relationships.  You may be saved and on your way to heaven. However, God called us not just to be saved, but to be salvation (Isaiah 49:6).  If you are the oppressor, STOP!  If you are the one being oppressed and taking it out on others, STOP!  If you are the disciples, there's no time like the present to cry out to Jesus.  He's listening.  Ask Jesus to help you deal with which ever you are in any situation.  He is the one that solved the multi-leveled problem.  It wasnt anything that the disciples did past asking for help.  This isnt about God liking you more or less.  He already loves you and he wants you to have the best kind of life, as well as living at peace with others.
Grace and Peace be with you ALWAYS!!!
