Define Beauty

What is beauty?  What makes some one/thing beautiful?  What makes it beautiful to some but not to others?  Some say that beauty comes from the inside.  That is a very cliche phrase but there is a ton of truth to it.  When the words beautiful or beauty are mentioned in the Bible, most of the time it is talking about things that God made.  For example: Jerusalem, Israel, Mt. Zion, Rebekah, Sarai. The list could go on and on. So therefore I ask you this question:  Who are we to call something ugly that God put His hand to creating?  I find it interesting that in Acts 3, there is a beggar at the Gate called Beautiful.  We know that usually beggars are not very well kept, and for a good reason.  They make do with what they have.  However, a beautiful thing was done for him there at that gate that contrasted his appearance.  Peter gave him the ability to walk which he had never had before.  He may have still been crusty and smelly but he received the love of God from that moment.  Love is blind.  Someone having love in their heart can make them more beautiful than anything you've ever seen.  Isaiah 52:7 says: How beautiful upon the mountains Are the feet of him who brings good news, Who proclaims peace, Who brings glad tidings of good things. I would say that Peter and John had some good news for the lame man that day, wouldnt you say?
As always there is a personal application to what I am talking about.  I have seen people, men and women alike, go to EXTREME measures to make themselves "look good".  Then again some people go to extreme lengths to make sure that they make a statement by looking terrible.  The Bible says that we are all made in the image of God.  It also says that we are fearfully and WONDERFULLY made.  Are any of you gonna tell God that he's ugly?  I have seen people be so cruel and mean to someone that they go home and cry and do harm to themselves because they cannot fit humanity's definition of beauty.  Ever shared a bathroom with a woman before?  I have, and she doesn't go to anywhere near the extremes that some do.  I can tell ya that they don't make enough drawers sometimes.  The point that I am trying to make is this:  Look at the world and everything in it from God's eyes.  He made it!  Next time that you pass a creek or a river out in the country, stop and look at it.  It's beautiful how the water flows and bends around the obstacles in its path.  Look at anybody that you know.  The human body is where God really out did Himself after making everything else.  We have so many systems and counter systems working in our bodies to keep it functioning that its close to impossible to keep up with them.  Ask a doctor sometime, they'll tell you.  A friend of mine has worked her butt off (no pun intended) for a while to get her body to look close to what she would like.  My wife and I tell her all the time that she's beautiful and she don't need to change a thing.  Then someone mentioned something about her weight and how it wasn't good enough.  Now that person probably didn't mean any harm by what they said, but it sincerely bothered my friend.  Take a second and tell someone that they are beautiful or they look nice.  After a while you will see their mood change.  Don't go crazy and get yourself in trouble, but give them a compliment.
Cut out this bed head, $180 hair do, materialistic, vanity crap that is creating a shallowness that is destroying self esteems across the world.  I see too many people that destroy themselves to meet the world's requirements.  Males use steroids, plastic surgery, overpriced clothing.  Women use diet pills, hair dye, tons of makeup, hair spray, curling irons, flattening irons, expensive jewelry, overpriced clothing, plastic surgery....need I go on.  You use foundation for building a house, not putting makeup on.  Furthermore, in

1 Timothy 2:9 and  1 Peter 3:3-4, Scripture gives instructions to women not go overboard to make themselves attractive.  It evens goes as far as to say, "Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel... rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God." Take Nicole Polizzi (aka Snookie) for example.  If you google her picture without makeup, she is MUCH more beautiful than ANYTIME that she has her "face" on.  Let the beauty of what God made shine through.  Nothing that man has made or ever will make will even hold a candle to the beauty of what God created.

Be who you are, be happy with the appearance that God gave you, look at others through God's eyes.  He made each and every one of them exactly the way that He wanted them to be.  Let me also say that if your weight or something is causing you health concerns, please work on it.  We are to live blessed in full health.  Other than that, rock what your Heavenly Father gave you!

  1. This is good stuff Brian. I have struggled with vanity my whole life. Not because I thought I was beautiful, but because I wanted to be. God can change self perception! God can make things whole! I have always wondered why people say "her attitude makes her ugly." How true it is! Things manifest in the fleshly form...like attitude and negative outlook. Vanity and low self esteem can be corrected with a renewing of the spirit.Elizabeth
